January 26 - A Different Kind Of Hunger Games

A Different Kind Of Hunger Games

Now I tell you to love each other, as I have loved you. The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. And you are my friends, if you obey me.” John 15:12-14 (CEV)

In a book called “What Is Love—From a Kid’s Point of View," children                     were asked to define love.  What is love, from a kid’s point of view? They wrote:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love."

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth."

"Love is when someone hurts you, and you get so mad, but you don’t yell at them because you know it would hurt their feelings."

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is okay."

As we move further into 2014, what if you were to commit yourself to get into the “Loving Zone.”  There are many great things that you can accomplish this year ...Lose 8 pounds…Start those college classes…Read a few books.  But what if you decided you were going to “Love with Affection.” Imagine the impact that would have on not only your life…but those around you.

According to Greg Risberg of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, the physiological benefit of hugging includes a reduction of blood pressure and increased oxygen in the blood. He says that we all have a "skin hunger," and we are missing out on a vital part of our health if we’re not getting in on some serious hugging. He maintains that four hugs a day are the minimum                                  required to meet that skin hunger. Stanley Simon of the University of Massachusetts says that "hugging does more than demonstrate affection. It actually seems to keep people healthy. The skin is the body’s largest sensory organ. If it’s under-stimulated, many people actually develop an aching sensation. These are the people who will find it harder to get well and to stay well."…

How has your pattern of love been lately? Have you been at your best or is God encouraging you to implement new things this year? It’s never too late to make another resolution. Let the games begin!

Reflections:
1)    One a scale from 1-10, how affectionate are you?
2)    Choose one person whom you will give a hug or express gratitude today
